This will be a short review comparing the 3 incarnations of the Fort Max toy. I was fortunate that all 3 were available in a span of 2 weeks here in Tokyo.

First off is the Car Robots (Robots-in-Disguise) Brave Maximus. Brave Maximus is the most recent incarnation of mold. Unfortunately, Brave Maximus was not released in the US.

Apparently, it failed safety conditions for the toy. The toy was released by Takara and later by Sonokong (Korean company that was licensed by Takara).

This is the Brave Max box. Pretty much covered by the boxart on one side and the toy pics on the the other. It also shows pics of the Autobots occupying Brave Max in city mode.

Brave Max is packaged in robot mode. The color is pretty dark. Lots of black, dark red, blue, and purple. The neon green panel is kinda off though.

The toy is huge...but it isn't exactly 2 feet tall (24 inches) in height. According to Dave van Domelen, it was around 21 inches only.

Its a very imposing toy. As with all G1..it has some articulation. Though if a toy this size were given anymore that the standard set of joints, it may not be able to stand up.

Next is Grand Maximus, from the japanese released series Masterforce. I don't have the box pics, since mine came loose. But I'm sure its not very far from the G1 boxes at that time.

Grand Max bot mode. Grand max has a lot of white colors and that bluish green. Plus the usual red and blue.

Not much difference from Brave Max other than the colors and lack of paint detail.

Finally...the first Max that started this recolor wave...Fortress Maximus!

The box has the artwork in front with a battlescene at the back. It also contains the tech specs of Fort Max.

Fort Max bot mode. Lots of grey, white, blue and red. Plus lots of stickers to apply. Good color scheme overall, but for me, he's second only to Brave Max in colors.

Now to go into the detailed comparison of the other parts of the 3 Maxes.

Nebulons bot/human mode:

Among the 3, Plasma (right - Brave Max) has the most detail. Spike (left - Fort Max) has the most coherent. Grand (center - Grand Max) looks like a bootleg...sadly.

Nebulons head mode:

Basically, the same comments as the Nebulon bot modes.

Cerebros bot mode:

Brave (right) has the most detail among the 3, with Cerebros having the most coherent color scheme.

Head on! The tech specs is a feature for all Headmasters. They show the statistics (Strength, Intelligence, Speed) for the bot. Brave only has colored lines with no labels, since Tech Specs weren't part of the Car Robots continuity.

Cerebros accessories.

Not shown in the picture is the pretender shell for Grand Max's Cerebros (middle). By far, Grand Max's Cerebros has the best number of accessories (Pretender shell, small gun, small sword), with Brave having the least (just a pistol). The Japanese Fort Max Cerebros comes with a small sword.

Communication center mode
[image]

This is Cerebros'/Brave's other mode. He plugs himself into the citymode of his partner.

Again, Brave Max has the most detail with Fort Max being a close second. I didn't like the white on Grand Max though.

Cog vehicle mode
[image]

Fort and Grand Max each had two sets of alternate vehicles. These vehicles do not form part of Fort's/Grand's city or base modes. They're just vehicles.

Cog bot mode
[image]

The two vehicles combine to from a robot (Cog). The transformation is too simple, and he comes with a small hand gun.

Guns and accessories.

Fort and Grand Max each come with a large photon rifle, a dual laser cannon, and a radar dish. Brave Max is accessory-less except for his radar dish.

Master swords
[image]

One of the sought after items, Fort and Grand Max have their masterswords. Brave Max's mastersword was given to the TRU Fire Convoy-God Magnus boxed set.

All 3 Maxes have the same attack mode: dual lasers from each fist, dual machine gun turrets in each bicep, two large cannons, double barrelled cannons on each leg, and a dual laser on the side of the left leg.

Transforming the 3 is very very difficult due to the sheer size. The battlestation/flying fortress/dreadnaught mode isn't convincing. More like the robot lying down with his arms raised.

The city mode is probably one of the best modes. Brave max shines in this mode...he has painted windows on the main tower...like a city at night.

Hope you liked this short review. Rommel can do a better one when he gets his hands on his Brave Max.
